MISS 2017, a portfolio of embroidered sashes

June 05, 2017

MISS 2017 Is a collection of silk sashes reminiscent of those worn by suffragettes in the early 20th century and then later by contestants in the Miss USA pageant. In this project The VICTORY GARDEN Collaboration return the sash to a context of political commentary from one of objectification, with text such as MISS REPRESENTED, MISS JUDGED and MISS LED.

President Trump owned the USA pageant until 2015 and the slogans reflect the artists’ frustrations with his misogynistic rhetoric and his assault on women’s health and reproductive rights.

The VICTORY GARDEN Collaboration is Louise Eastman, Jess Frost, Tara Geer, Katie Michel, Wendy Small and Janis Stemmermann.

MISS 2017 is included in the Public Collections of The New York Historical Society and The Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Yale University in New Haven.

Trump World – Signs of Protest
Art Blog, By Matthew Rose, February 19, 2017

Excerpt:

Small actions and objects became symbols of resistance–hand-knitted “pink pussy” hats became the de facto signifier of defiance.

In Brooklyn, New York, a small group of women artists, curators, gallery owners, and printmakers called the Victory Garden Women’s Collective came together to print and distribute more than one thousand "Suffragette Sashes" for the January 21 marches. The pieces echoed the women’s suffrage march in Washington D.C., March 3, 1913. Designed by artist Louise Eastman sashes read, MISS TREATED, MISS JUDGED, MISS HANDLED and MISS LED...

VICTORY GARDEN at Planthouse Gallery

December 09, 2016

Louise Eastman will be participating in VICTORY GARDEN, a salon style exhibition featuring paintings and works on paper by fifty artists from around the country at Planthouse Gallery in Manhattan. The opening reception will take place on Thursday, December 8, from 6-8PM. All works will be priced at $500 or less.

Exhibition Dates: December 8, 2016 to January 13, 2017
Opening Reception: Thursday, December 8, 6-8pm

During World War I and II, Victory Gardens were planted next to private homes and in public parks throughout North America, Europe and Australia. Designed to reduce pressure on the food supply, the gardens were also considered to be morale-boosting symbols of solidarity. Government-led campaigns were mounted, with lithographic posters targeting urban and rural dwellers alike and inspiring them to plant fruits and vegetables. Citizens felt empowered by their contributions to the war effort and rewarded by the produce grown. Today, our world is in political and environmental turmoil and we are similarly in need of nourishment and unification. The show will feature small paintings, prints, and works on paper that in some way connect to this theme.
